September 4 in GO! Magazine (updated with correct Ween link)

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Sorry folks. Absolutely no time for anything other than links this week. Today’s GO! Magazine is packed full of music articles, including:

-Country star Jason Aldean at Les Schwab Amphitheater

-Blues legends Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal at Les Schwab Amphitheater

-Singer-songwriter Brett Dennen at the Athletic Club of Bend

-Pianist George Winston at Tower Theatre

-Moon Mountain Music Festival at Elk Lake

-Sagebrush Rock Festival in Christmas Valley

-Pop-rockers Wendy Darling at Silver Moon Brewing in Bend and an end-of-summer, all-star jam at Angeline’s Bakery in Sisters

(Update: Oops. When I first published this post, I had the wrong link for the Ween review below. The link is now correct.)

-And you can click right here to read my review of last weekend’s Ween concert at Les Schwab Amphitheater

This week, I think non-subscribers can see most of those, so get yer click on. Or, pick up the print version of GO! Magazine to see all the pretty pictures.

Jason Aldean to play the Schwab?

Monday, May 11th, 2009

It sure looks like it.

I’ve asked Monqui, the Portland promoter that books the Les Schwab Amphitheater, for confirmation that country artist Jason Aldean will perform Sept. 10 at the venue, and I’ll let you know what I hear. But given that the date is listed on Aldean’s Web site, at ticketmaster.com, and at leading tour-date site pollstar.com, I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet.

(UPDATE: The show is confirmed, and tickets go on sale Saturday. A press release from Monqui with ticket prices and other info is below the jump.)

I was at a party Saturday night (with a mighty fine iPod soundtrack, by the way) where folks were grumbling about this year’s amphitheater lineup. I mentioned the Aldean show and got a lot of blank stares. Which is understandable; I didn’t know who he was a few months ago, either. But if you’re a country fan, you’re probably familiar with the dude. His song “She’s Country” is currently atop Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, and his album “Wide Open” is currently at No. 12 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, and No. 4 on the Top Country Albums chart.

If you’re pumped that Ween is coming to town but disappointed in the rest of the summer lineup so far, remember that last season, country super-duo Brooks & Dunn was the Schwab’s best-selling concert, selling 4,829 tickets. That was 520 more than Death Cab for Cutie, 966 more than Wilco, 1,200 more than Stone Temple Pilots, 1,370 more than Modest Mouse, and 1,439 more than Ween sold back in the heady economy of 2006. And in the not-as-heady economy of 2009, the folks who book these shows and run the venue need to sell tickets.

(You can read my story about the amphitheater’s 2008 season here. Be sure to click on “more photos” under the photo to see the nifty graphic that summarizes the Schwab’s ticket sales over the past six seasons.)
