Happy Halloween, kids and grown-up kids!

I’ve got no snappy intro this week, but I do want to know this: What are you dressing up as for Halloween? Let me know in the comments. (I’m quite tempted to shave a corn maze into my hair and go around interrupting peoples’ conversations.)

I’ll tell you what Bend is dressing up as this year: A town with a ton of bands playing at clubs all over the place. Here are five shows I wrote about:

-Person People and The Staxx Brothers tonight at the Domino Room.
-Empty Space Orchestra Saturday at McMenamins Old St. Francis School.
-Warm Gadget and Goodbye Dyna Saturday at Silver Moon Brewing & Taproom.
-Necktie Killer, Tuck & Roll and Danger Death Ray Saturday at Black Horse Saloon.
-Moon Mountain Ramblers Saturday at the Domino Room.

That’s not all that’s happening. Check out The Bulletin’s events calendar to find a long list of festivities, or better yet, pick up a print copy of GO! Magazine, which contains both the calendar and the “Area 97 Clubs” page, which has even more stuff listed.

Of course, not everything that’s happening this weekend is Halloween-related. Here are a couple options where you won’t feel weird if you don’t dress in costume:

-The popular California ska band Mad Caddies are performing on Sunday at Mountain’s Edge bar, which is the new name of the old Timbers South in Bend. (Click here to read about why the Caddies are playing a place that’s quite a bit smaller than the venues they usually play.)

-On Sunday, Christian hitmakers Todd Agnew and Building 429 will put on a concert at the Christian Life Center in Bend.

So obviously, plenty of choices out there. Everyone have fun and be safe.

Bend Roots Revival: Day 2

“We’re The JZ Band,” said David Z after his band’s first song at the Bend Roots Revival, “and it’s daylight.”

It was daylight. That’s one of the funny things about an outdoor, all-day music festival; bands that are used to playing in dark, cramped, stale-air bars are suddenly exposed to the sun, the wide open sky and fresh air.

In Bend, it’s a nice place to be. It could’ve been chilly this weekend — it’s late September in the High Desert, after all — but instead the weather has been absolutely perfect for this arsty cornucopia.

Empty Space Orchestra offers free download on new site

Local instrumental space-rock whiz-kids the Empty Space Orchestra went live with their new Web site today, and it’s pretty, pretty, pretty slick.

There are photos, videos, a very cool archive of posters, and a list of upcoming shows. (The band is booked to play the movie theater at McMenamins Old St. Francis School on Halloween. Should be epic.)

Best of all, click on “Downloads” and you can snag, for free, a recording of the band’s performance at McMenamins in July. (Nothing’s free, of course. But this costs only an e-mail address.)

Vetiver and Empty Space Orchestra. Both great bands, though very different. Both playing tonight in Bend. And the timing works out so that you can see ‘em both if you’d like.

July 31 in GO! Magazine

These next seven days, folks, might just be the busiest, music-wise, of the year so far in Central Oregon. Almost every night you have options, and many of those options are either big names or big talents (or both). Are you planning on hitting any of these? Some of them? All of them? Leave a comment and let me know what your plans are.

Oh, and all today’s links are free and available to non-subscribers, so click away! Let’s go in chronological order:

-Tonight, Vetiver plays California sun-kissed folk-pop at Silver Moon Brewing.

-Also tonight, up-and-coming country stars Lady Antebellum will play the final free show at the Deschutes County Fair.

-Looking for something else to do tonight? Try Sagebrush Rock at Boston’s or Empty Space Orchestra at Parrilla or Necktie Killer at The Underground.

-On Saturday, a big ol’ rap show will roll into the Midtown Ballroom. Kottonmouth Kings and Swollen Members are co-headlining, and local rapper The Dirtball will perform. Should be one of the biggest Midtown shows in a while.

-Also Saturday, Tuck And Roll plays at Silver Moon and Apropos performs at The Studio.

-On Sunday, the Les Schwab Amphitheater will host its second ticketed show of the summer when Lyle Lovett and His Large Band come to town.

-Also on Sunday, Susie McEntire Luchsinger does her annual concert out in Antelope.

-Monday night is blues night at the Tower Theatre, where veteran guitarist Johnny Winter will appear.

-Wednesday night will bring a couple of young, rootsy bands to Bend, as bluegrassers Town Mountain play at Silver Moon and Breathe Owl Breathe hits McMenamins.

Again, anyone can get to any of those stories, so check ‘em out. And if you want to see the cool dartboard motif that the GO! Magazine design team put together, pick up a copy of the actual newspaper!

Happy Fourth of July, patriot! I know the whole family is going to be hanging out around the grill this weekend, and that inevitably leads to a big, America-centric singalong, with ol’ Uncle Carl leading the way on “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

So when you hear Uncle Carl start in with “O say, can you see…” here’s what you do: Duck inside, grab your GO! Magazine, and read up on all the musical happenings around the region over the next week. Here’s what’s in there:

-An interview with Bend local Franchot Tone about his L.A.-based band Culver City Dub Collective, which will play Sunday at Les Schwab Amphitheater. Here’s a free download of a track from CCDC’s self-titled EP. Grab it. It’s groovy:

-A short story on the kickoff of Munch & Music in Drake Park, featuring virtuoso guitarist Fareed Haque and his Flat Earth Ensemble.

-My review of two fine, local rock bands — Tuck and Roll and Goodbye Dyna — that played sets at Deschutes Brewery’s 21st birthday party last weekend.

-Details on the big Fourth of July party happening Saturday at Bendistillery Martini Bar, where local hip-hop artists Mosley Wotta and Cloaked Characters will release a split CD containing four tracks from each. -Blurbs on the Empty Space Orchestra/Ruins of Ooah show Saturday at Silver Moon, the return of reggae legends The Abyssinians, the reopening of the Harmony House concert series venue (featuring folkie Jack Williams), and a hip-hop show at New Hope Church.

Lots of new LOCAL music to listen to

Central Oregon musicians have been incredibly productive this year, releasing a whole bunch of recorded music, with no sign of slowing down any time soon. Just look at all the new stuff you can hear online:

-The Sofa Kings do a bluesy, female-fronted take on straight-up rock ‘n’ roll, a la Heart or Jefferson Airplane/Starship. And, they’ve just posted a few songs from their recorded-but-not-yet-released CD on their MySpace.

-Redmond’s The Roe is known for its pop-infused emo/punk, which is why their new song, “Oh Amelia,” is so startling. It’s got a lo-fi, twangy feel, like a sleepy Social Distortion. Hear it at the band’s MySpace. (”We would like to make it clear that this IS NOT portraying the style of the new CD,” the band writes. “We are keeping our same style and keepin it rock n roll.”

-Warm Gadget is a newish project on the local scene, a creepy, electro-industrial collaboration between electronic-music artist (and former Vihara member) Colten Williams and Tim Vester, formerly of The Kronkmen, with some help from Eric Metzger, Jared Forqueran and Jeff Swearengin. The band recently posted some of its newer music, and it’s great, weird stuff.

-The Commercial Underground has a few new tracks up on their MySpace. These guys do breezy, feel-good, throwback pop-rock that’ll make you long for the ’70s, if you’re old enough to remember the ’70s.

-Since the last time I visited their MySpace, The Space Hoax has posted two new songs — “Aries Day” and “Vintage International” — for our listening pleasure. Both are excellent, and you should go listen to them right now. Seriously.

-Just the other day, Empty Space Orchestra put a live version of “Pandemonium,” recorded early last month, on its MySpace. Go take a listen to hear what everyone’s buzzing about.

-Local hip-hop cat Mosley Wotta has a “ruff edit” of a downcast new song called “Blood Sugar” on his MySpace. There are a couple other newer tracks up there, too. All are worth hearing.

June 5 in GO! Magazine

Good morning, Frequency faithful. Can someone tell me how in the world it’s already June!?

Central Oregon has warmed up in the last couple weeks, and around here, warmer weather usually means more music. So without further adieu, here’s a look at what’s happening in Central Oregon over the next seven days, brought to you by LeBron James, who has plenty of time these days to do things like sponsor music blog posts. (Speaking of the NBA, have you read the NBA Finals preview that local hip-hop group Top Shelf did for Frequency? If not, you should. It’s a fun read.)

Anyway, in today’s GO! Magazine, we have:

-A little bit about each of the six young, mostly local bands playing in tonight’s Rise Up Battle of the Bands. Read up on them, then visit their MySpaces to hear their work: Adventure Galley / The Autonomics / The Snag / The Space Hoax / We Are Brontosaurus … and Hunters on the Horizon are so new, they don’t yet have a MySpace!

-My review of last weekend’s Rise Up benefit show featuring Water & Bodies, We Are Brontosaurus and Empty Space Orchestra. It’s like Rise Up week in GO!

-A roundup of what’s happening at Silver Moon Brewing this week.

-My plea to you, dear reader, imploring you to go see the excellent alt-folk band Weinland on Saturday. (There’s a much more extensive story about the band here.)

-The details on tonight’s hip-hop show featuring Twitter-crazy Bay Area rapper Mistah F.A.B.

-A quick overview of where a few local acts are playing, including Detour: Jazz, The Quons, Moon Mountain Ramblers, Brian Hanson and a whole bunch of punk and metal bands.

-A reminder that Wednesday’s Brandi Carlile show at the Tower Theatre is sold out.
