This week in GO! Magazine’s music section

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Morning, folks. Short, simple roundup of what’s in GO! Magazine today. Find all this stuff at The Bulletin’s music page:

There are a bunch of solid shows in town this week, and it seemed to me that an inordinate number of them featured female artists, so I packaged those together. Click right here to read up on the contemporary folk of Beth Wood and Shireen Amini, the sultry Americana of Emma Hill, the soulful hip-hop of God-Des & She (who are headlining the That’s So Gay black and white party), and VJ Kittyrox, who runs the popular 80s Video Dance Attack party, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Elsewhere in this week’s music section: local band Roses at Gunpoint will play to raise money for paralyzed snowboarder Tyler Eklund, Empty Space Orchestra ends its four-week residency at Silver Moon, Elliot and Adventure Galley headline a Rise Up show at Century Center, The Quons are at Velvet, Willie Carmichael is at Three Creeks Brewing Co., and new music spot The Marilyn hosts Justin Lavik / Grace Laxson tonight and The Sweet Harlots Saturday. Plus, Mountain Country Idol has started in Redmond, pitting several local artists against each other over several weeks in an effort to find Central Oregon’s finest country act.

September 18 in GO! Magazine

Friday, September 18th, 2009

The quiet week in between the Sisters Folk Festival and the Bend Roots Revival isn’t so quiet after all. You’ve got several options for hearing great music over the next seven days, and here are some of them:

Gimme Indie Rock, Part I: These United States roll into the Silver Moon with a punched-up sound and a new album that reflects the mood of post-election America.

Gimme Indie Rock, Part II: Memorable country-rock songs seem to pour naturally from the pen of John McCauley, the twentysomething driving force behind Deer Tick.

Gimme Indie Rock, Part III: The Northwest churns out more interesting, experimental pop bands than anywhere else, and two of them — Finn Riggins from Idaho, and Church from Portland — are heading this way.

Here is my review of Todd Snider, Peter Rowan and Kelly Joe Phelps at the Sisters Folk Festival.

Also, the Domino Room hosts gangster rappers Mr. Capone-E and Mr. Criminal, Bend’s Erin Cole-Baker and Elliot are playing a back to school concert, Blue Turtle Seduction returns to town, The Autonomics invade JC’s, and some of Bend’s best rappers (Top Shelf, Mosley Wotta, Cloaked Characters) will throw a free show Thursday at Boondock’s.

One thing that didn’t get much ink in the print version of GO! Magazine: The Bend Roots Revival will kick off Thursday night with a meet-and-greet and open mic at Parrilla Grill at 6 p.m., followed by some Grateful Dead cover action from Back From the Dead (5:30-7 p.m.) and Rising Tide (7-9 p.m.) over at the Victorian Cafe. You should check that out, and then pick up next Friday’s GO! Magazine for full coverage of the rest of the fest.

And pick up today’s GO! for access to all the articles linked above, or subscribe online, otherwise you may run into the paywall.

July 10 in GO! Magazine

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Today, the regular Friday post about what’s in GO! Magazine’s music section doubles as a motherlode of free, downloadable music, thanks to some generous bands. Let’s get right to it, shall we?

-Elliot is a group of five local guys who play sweeping, positive rock music, and they’ve provided Frequency readers with a song for download that you can’t get anywhere else (except, of course, by buying their album “Rocketships”):

Download Elliot, “Sideways”

-My plan was to interview fast-rising African guitarist Vieux Farka Toure for a story this week, but conflicting schedules got in the way. Instead, you’ll have to settle for a track from “Fondo,” his acclaimed new album:

Download Vieux Farka Toure, “Fafa”

-Colorado bluegrass combo Head for the Hills will be busy Sunday, playing an outdoor show in the afternoon and an indoor show in the evening. Check out a couple of their songs right here:

Download Head for the Hills, “Hornet’s Nest”
Download Head for the Hills, “Harvest Moon”

-The Summit Saloon & Stage is gettin’ funky tonight with The Pimps of Joytime, and gettin’ rootsy on Thursday with Taarka. I have a Joytime song for you, but I’m running into some technical issues, so you’ll just have to visit the band’s MySpace and listen to “Bonita” there.

Also happening this week: Jade’s Jazz Festival in La Pine and a great underground hip-hop show at Bendistillery Martini Bar featuring Mine+Us and DJ Hoppa.

Not happening this week: The Itals at the Domino Room. There is a blurb in GO! about this show, but the show was canceled after the section went to press.

All the MP3 downloads above are free to anyone. However, the articles linked can only be viewed by subscribers to The Bulletin’s Web site. If you can’t see them and you want to, you’ll either need to subscribe or pick up a copy of today’s paper.
