[Video] Town Mountain at McMenamins

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Sorry for the slow posting, folks. I spent the past few days seeing Fleet Foxes and transporting a pig from Corvallis to Bend, leaving little time for blogging. (Every word of that sentence is true.)

In a town replete with opportunities to see progressive bluegrass played live, it’s nice to see a real traditional combo come through every once in a while. Last week, Asheville, N.C.’s Town Mountain set up shop at McMenamins Old St. Francis School for three nights in a row, and friend of Frequency Adam Sears was there on Thursday with his video camera.

These clips look and sound great, so check ‘em out for some tasty pickin’.

[Video] Polecat at McMenamins

Monday, July 18th, 2011

The friendly folks in the Bellingham, Wash., bluegrass-ish band Polecat came through town twice in the past 10 days or so, once for a set at the Bend Summer Festival and once for a show at McMenamins Old St. Francis School.

My colleague Adam Sears was at the McMenamins show, video camera in hand. His footage is below. As you’ll see, this band pumps up its acoustic sound with drums, electric guitars and a bunch of sounds that wouldn’t be caught dead in traditional bluegrass. It’s pretty cool, so check it out.

Larry and His Flask: new video, album preorder

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

A couple of notes on local thrashgrass blur Larry and His Flask:

1) The guys’ new album, “All That We Know,” is now available for preorder right here. There’s an array of colored-vinyl options for collector nerds, plus one package that comes with a hip flask engraved with the LAHF logo. Awesome!

2) The band filmed its first official video at the Rise Up Warehouse in May, and today, it showed up on Altpress. Behold:

I’m starting to wonder if the Flask might return home from the Warped Tour an even bigger deal than I thought they would. Scroll through their Facebook, Google their name … you’ll find a lot of folks out there falling in love with this band.

[Video / review] Vandaveer and Cheyenne Marie Mize at McMenamins

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

(Note: I just realized I never posted this. D’oh!)

So here’s how this works, in reverse: It took me a while to publish this blog post. Why? Because it took forever for me to edit and upload all this video. Why? Because there’s a lot of it. Why? Because I was compelled to just keep rolling Wednesday night as up-and-coming folkies Vandaveer and Cheyenne Marie Mize lit up a dark Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins Old St. Francis School.

It was a night full of gorgeous songs. Mize opened with an hour-long solo set that featured a handful of moments so arresting, you could hear a pin drop in a room that rarely lacks for chatter. The sine-wave keyboard line of “Have You,” the minimalist violin plucking of “Rest,” and the jaw-droppingly beautiful love song “All I Am” not only commanded the attention of the audience, they seemed to stop time. (Video of all three is below.) Mize is an enormous talent, and I wouldn’t be surprised if in a couple years, the folks who saw her play an intimate (not to mention free) show Wednesday in Bend will be thanking their lucky stars they did.

If Mize’s set was a thing of understated beauty, Vandaveer’s was more like the confident swagger that comes when you know you’re looking good. The band’s principle, Mark Charles Heidinger, has it all: catchy and clever songs, cinema-star good looks, and charm pouring from every pore. He’s got an affable, self-effacing manner and a million-watt smile, and he pairs those two things with a seemingly endless well of memorable melodies. I really believe the guy has all he needs to become a huge star in the post-Avett/Mumford age. I know if I were a record label exec, I’d be swooping in on him as we speak.

Anyway, about the set: Heidinger plays his acoustic guitar in a propulsive, percussive style, and his voice is strong and clear. His cohort — harmony queen Rose Guerin — is a show-stopping alto that adds a bit of needed grit to the mix. Heidinger bounced around his catalog, from the title track from his new album “Dig Down Deep” to the Simon & Garfunkel-ish shuffle of “How Many Takes it Takes” to the apocalyptic chop of “Spite.” He played an impromptu cover of The Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon” to honor a little girl’s purchase at the merch table (“Our cutest customer ever,” Heidinger said), and he had Mize join the band on drums for a run through Vandaveer’s “hit single” (he said with a laugh) “The Nature of Our Kind.”

Overall, the two sets were nice counterpoints. Mize’s was soft and supple and vulnerable, Vandaveer’s was sharp and solid and airtight. Both were brilliant in their own way. And they added up to one of the best shows I’ve seen in Bend so far this year.

Here’s lots of video evidence. I would strongly encourage you to take a listen. First up, five songs from Mize, including, I believe, three new ones.

[Video] Erin Cole-Baker’s album-release show at The Oxford Hotel

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Nice video of Friday night’s Erin Cole-Baker concert from John Michaelson of Bend, aka @Angry_Antlers on Twitter. Here’s “I’m Thinking of You,” one of several songs on Cole-Baker’s new album, “Big Sky,” that finds the Bend-based singer-songwriter expanding her sonic palette beyond her usual, whimsical folk-pop fare.

If you’d like, you can read my article on Cole-Baker and “Big Sky” by clicking here. Heck, here’s another one, too, from about 18 months ago.

Erin Cole Baker’s new video, “Big Sky” release show

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Click the video above for an early peek at Bend singer-songwriter Erin Cole-Baker‘s new album “Big Sky,” via a Josh Cordell-shot video for the title track. (That’s inside the Backporch coffee shop in the Century Center, right? I’ve never been in there, but that’s my guess.)

Sounds like Erin, doesn’t it? And that’s a good thing.

On Friday night, Cole-Baker will celebrate the release of “Big Sky” with a big show at The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend. Here’s all the details, stuck to the bottom of this good-lookin’ gig poster.

I’ll have more on Cole-Baker and “Big Sky” in Friday’s GO! Magazine.

[Video] Or, the Whale at McMenamins

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

I didn’t get to see as much of the San Francisco roots-rock band Or, the Whale as I wanted to last night at McMenamins, but I saw enough to know those folks know their way around a swooning country song. The mini-set I saw was a bit twangier than I expected, but really beautiful. (And now, I’m sitting here listening to the band’s self-titled sophomore album and wondering what I was expecting. This is some mighty fine twang.)

The key components to Or, the Whale’s sound are the lovely harmonies of Alex Robins and Lindsay Garfield, plus the prominent, mournful pedal-steel guitar playing of Tim Marcus. All are on display in the videos below, in which the band plays a couple tunes from its debut album “Light Poles and Pines,” plus their glorious cover of Britney Spears’ hit song “Toxic.” Enjoy.

[Video] Empty Space Orchestra CD-release show at Century Center

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Eventually, I’ll post some thoughts on Empty Space Orchestra‘s CD-release show last night at the Century Center in Bend, as well as some nice Andy Tullis photos. For now, moving pictures will have to do.

First up, “Brainjar” … which I sort of unwittingly joined halfway through. Hey, it was late.

And here, the band does “Tennessee Red” and then goes right into a rippin’ version of “It’s Hard to Play Basketball in the Dark.” Check the light show!

“Their van is so ghetto it had a padlock on the outside.”

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Here’s a super fun video. “Straight Trippin’” is, it appears, a web series that’ll follow a couple of buddies as they hitchhike from Portland to Los Angeles to New York. In the pilot, below, one of their first rides comes from Central Oregon’s own road warriors, Larry and His Flask. This was shot more than two years ago, when the Flask lived on tour even more than they do now.

The whole thing is worth your time, but if you want to see the Flask part, you’ll want to watch from 4:30 to 6:50, which includes a short interview with guitarist Dallin Bulkley, a classic Jesse Marshall laugh (at 5:45), and one of the band’s trademark sidewalk jams. Fun times!

As long as we’re here, how about a couple of Flask news bits? First, their new album is done and due out in June on the Silver Sprocket Bicycle Club record label, according to Marshall, just before the band heads out one of the biggest, most successful summer festivals, the Warped Tour. (Warped’s annual compilation will feature the Flask song “Blood Drunk,” among huge names like Paramore and Against Me!)

Before Warped, the band will play a local show June 11 at Century Center, which will double as an EP-release show for The Autonomics. And word on the street is that when they return from Warped, Larry and His Flask will headline a certain Bend-based rootsy festival that they’ve never played before, but should be a perfect fit for their revival-style thrash-grass. If that comes to pass, I predict it’ll be a wild scene.

Here’s that video:

[Video] Boxcar Stringband at Silver Moon

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Bend’s throwback rockabilly blues boys Boxcar Stringband played Silver Moon a couple weekends ago. Adam Sears got some video of the occasion, and then I forgot to post it. So here it is:

Don’t forget to catch ‘em when they open for Cash’d Out at the Domino Room on Cinco de Mayo!
