[MP3] Kousefly, “On Our Way Home”

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Remember over here when I told you that Bend pop-rock combo Kousefly‘s long-incubating debut album was just a few weeks away from being ready for public consumption?

Well, that time has arrived; “Down By A Billion” is here, available through all kinds of channels, including Ranch Records in Bend and the usual online suspects. The trio’s website will certainly point you in the right direction.

If you want a taste before you commit, you’re in luck, because the band — Chris Evans, Brian Hinderberger and Meshem Jackson — is offering Frequency readers an exclusive download of one of the songs from “Down By A Billion,” called “On Our Way Home.” The song kind of captures what these dudes are all about; it starts out floating through a sort of rubbery, psychedelic murk before opening up into a chorus teeming with (“Summerteeth” era) Wilco-esque backing vocals, while Evans sings road-wearily of life in a DIY band.

Anyway, I’m only leaving this up for two weeks, so grab it while you can, buddy:

Download Kousefly, “On Our Way Home”

And thank Kousefly next time you see them, which should be soon, because they’re playing a bunch of gigs these days. Find dates at their website.

Tonight: Poison Control Center at Mountain’s Edge (with MP3 and interview)

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

So, yeah. Lots to do in town tonight for the music junkies. And many of your options are good: The White Buffalo brings his full band to Silver Moon. The Aggrolites are gonna dirty-reggae up the Domino Room. Kelly Joe Phelps and Corinne West at Angeline’s in Sisters.

This is where I implore you to at least consider seeing Iowa-based indie rockers the Poison Control Center at Mountain’s Edge (fka Timbers South, in that strip mall by the Goodwill). I already told you why in last week’s GO! Magazine; click here to read that. Today, more goodies to grab your attention:

1) PCC’s 2010 album “Sad Sour Future” is a sprawling monument to the joys of underground rock ‘n’ roll; it buzzes and jangles and stumbles, finding all kinds of nooks to explore within the well-worn territory of indie rock. Think Pavement’s “Wowee Zowee” on Ritalin. Here’s one of the best tracks, made available by the band for you to download:

Download Poison Control Center, “Being Gone”

2) I didn’t have the newspaper space or the time to call the PCC for an interview last week. Now, though, I kind of wish I’d made it happen. Four of the guys — the ones not driving the van from Seattle to Portland, I’d guess — took the time to answer some of my silly questions via e-mail, and they seem like awesome dudes who love exclamation marks! Here’s our digital convo, with some light editing done by yours truly:

Download a new mix from DJ Swett, and see him perform tonight

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Late notice: If you’re looking for a place to dance tonight, strongly consider the Madhappy Lounge (known until recently as the Bendistillery Martini Bar downtown), where local DJs Swett and Smoke — two members of the vast and productive Grove family — are gonna pump the place full of party-whompin’ happy gas all night long.

DJ Swett

They’ll get going around 9 p.m., and there’s no cover. The gig will double as a release party for DJ Swett’s new mixtape “Come Shine,” which you can and should download by clicking here. I can’t tell you how stoked I was when I heard the mbira kick in at about 3:20; that’s “Blastit,” by Seattle hip-hop act Shabazz Palaces. You can read some of my past praise for them here and here.

Tonight: Stephanie Schneiderman at McMenamins (with MP3 download)

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Portland-based electro-pop chanteuse Stephanie Schneiderman is at McMenamins Old St. Francis School tonight. It’s free and will start at 7 p.m., with Sisters singer-songwriter Anastacia opening.

You can read more about Schneiderman here, and here’s a song for you, for free download. It’s cool, so don’t skip it:

Download Stephanie Schneiderman, “Wide Open”

Tonight: The Preservation at Silver Moon (with MP3 download)

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

The band at Silver Moon tonight is pretty cool. They’re called The Preservation, and they sound like the Austin, Texas music scene come to life: a pinch of twang-pop, a dash of of rockabilly and swing, a smidgen of soul, and a healthy splash of margarita mix and festive chili pepper lights. Think the Beatles/Kinks/Velvet Underground, Wilco, The Derailers and Loretta Lynn’s “Portland, Oregon,” and you’re barking up the right taco stand.

Or, just grab this tune and give it a listen:

Download The Preservation, “George Nelson”

The Preservation plays at 9 tonight at Silver Moon Brewing & Taproom (24 N.W. Greenwood Ave., Bend). Cover is $5.

[MP3] Hosannas, “Happiness” (+ Finn Riggins, Empty Space Orchestra)

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

There’s a terrific show happening Friday night at the Rise Up Warehouse in Bend, featuring locals Empty Space Orchestra, Idaho’s Finn Riggins and Portland’s Hosannas.

All three acts are very, very good, but I’ll have some extended praise for the opener, Hosannas, in Friday’s GO! Magazine. In the meantime, here’s a track from that band’s new album, “Then & Now & Then,” for free download:

Download Hosannas, “Happiness”

(Want some free tuneage from Finn Riggins and Empty Space? Of course you do. So click here and here and here to get it.)

[MP3] Download a new solo track from Franchot Tone

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Folks aren’t used to seeing Franchot Tone out front of a musical project. The Bend resident is best known as the co-founder of the groovy roots-reggae outfit Culver City Dub Collective, and locally, he made a splash a couple years ago by producing singer-songwriter Reed Thomas Lawrence’s self-titled album, which helped propel Lawrence to the point he’s at now: moving to L.A. and rising through the music industry. (Read all about CCDC here, and the Lawrence/Tone synergy here.)

Over the past several months, though, Tone has been holed up in his studio at Rage Productions, slowly but surely piecing together his first solo project. Last I heard, he still had a ways to go before he’ll be releasing anything, but on Monday, he shipped over a sneak peek at his first completed track, which sounds pretty much like what we all know Tone can do well: sun-baked, easygoing, reggae-flavored pop-rock. You can download it here:

Download Franchot Tone, “Everything’s Fine”

Want to catch Tone live? You’re in luck; he’s just begun playing out with a band that includes Nate Berry on drums and Craig Brown on bass. They’ll perform at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the free post-Pole Pedal Paddle party at Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend.

[MP3] Free download, spot on the guest list from The Ascetic Junkies

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Portland’s full of bands who’ve become pretty big names over the past several years. Think Blind Pilot, Blitzen Trapper, The Decemberists, etc.

Of course, at one time, those bands weren’t so widely known. Wouldn’t it have been cool to see them back then?

In my opinion, that’s about where The Ascetic Junkies are right now. The Portland-based pop band has a very appealing sound that should help them find success far beyond the Pacific Northwest. Who knows? In five years, they may be playing large theaters like … well … like all those bands I mentioned before.

For now, though, you can catch the Junkies at Silver Moon Brewing in Bend on Saturday night. It’s $7 to get in — and that’s a steal — but the band is also making five spots on the guest list available to folks who e-mail them their favorite Junkies song to AsceticJunkies@gmail.com. The first five folks to do that will get into the show for free.

If you’re unfamiliar with this band, you need to fix that. Here’s a taste of just how fun they can be:

Download The Ascetic Junkies, “French Girls”

Look for my full feature on the band in Friday’s GO! Magazine.

[MP3] Horse Feathers, “Belly of June”

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

In case you missed it, the beautifully hushed, Portland-based indie-folk band Horse Feathers is coming to the Tower Theatre May 25 to kick off the new PDXchange Program series, which aims to bring the Rose City’s indie bands to Bend’s stately downtown stage, and pair them with local openers.

Horse Feathers’ new album, “Thistled Spring,” is out now on Kill Rock Stars, and it is a gorgeous piece of work. Principal Feather Justin Ringle pens some of the prettiest, most delicate music around, and I suspect this new album is going to raise the profile of his band considerably. Here’s a taste of “Thistled Spring,” available for free download courtesy Kill Rock Stars:

Download Horse Feathers, “Belly of June”

Tickets to see Horse Feathers (and opener The Sweet Harlots) are $15 (plus service charges) and are available through the Tower Theatre. PDXchange’s second show will feature The Helio Sequence and Empty Space Orchestra on June 3.

[MP3] Download “Los Angeles” by El Salvador

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

We’re still taking advantage of Ben’s absence by posting stuff on the blog without his knowledge. That’s what you get for having babies!

Today, it’s a song from Portland rock band El Salvador. The band is working on booking a Central Oregon show, or so guitarist Nick Krautter says. This would be a good thing. El Salvador is a three-piece that combines alternately pretty and gutsy guitar work with Krautter’s compelling vocals, not to mention some fine songwriting. Check out this song from their EP “Into the Night,” out in June:

Download El Salvador’s  “Los Angeles.”

In the meantime, we hear a Father’s Day weekend show might not be out of the question for the members of El Salvador, one of whom is former Central Oregonian Joel Barker. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.
