Welcome Adrianne Jeffries to Frequency!

Friday, June 11th, 2010

A couple weeks ago, The Bulletin’s business desk was bolstered by the arrival of Adrianne Jeffries, who’s interning in Bend for the summer.

That’s great … for the business desk. What I’m excited about is Adrianne’s a bit of a music nut, too, and totally into blogging. Which means she’s a great fit for Frequency!

So, yeah, Adrianne’s going to be blogging for Frequency this summer, and my hope is that her eyes, ears and youthful enthusiasm will not only bring more content to this blog, but also help broaden our scope by bringing a different set of interests and a different voice to the table. Up to this point, I’ve written the vast majority of the posts around here, but starting today, I hope you’ll take a quick second to check the author of each post. (It’s in that little space in between the post’s title and body.)

Anyway, enough of my words. Here are a few from Adrianne:

Hi, Frequency readers, it’s nice to meet you. I’m 23 and I’ve been writing and reporting since I was 16. I usually write about business or news, which is often times super interesting and just as often not.

But I’m pretty pumped to have the chance to cover something close to my heart –- music. Specifically, two genres of music: 1) Music I can dance to, and 2) Music I can enjoy with my brain.

I’ve been living in Portland for the past year and a half, where I was blessed with a guest-list spot at most of the electronic shows thanks to my producer-boyfriend and his manager.

As a result, I’m pretty into electronic music, especially the kind that crosses into hip-hop, funk, soul (music I can dance to) or trip hop and downtempo (music my brain likes). I also always enjoy good organic sounds from a really tight band with instruments and all that traditional stuff.

Like I said, I’m excited to be covering electronic and other kinds of music in Bend for Frequency. We’re rolling out a new feature, Local Scratch, which will profile local DJs, and I hope to broaden the blog’s reach by getting to more shows and contributing photo, video and witty commentary.

You can follow me on Twitter at @citadrianne, or email me tips at music@bendbulletin.com.

Happy Birthday Frequency! Now give us feedback … please!

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

It’s kind of hard to believe, but today marks the Frequency blog’s first birthday. One year ago, we kicked this thing off with the hope that it would become a comprehensive source of music-related news and reviews for Central Oregon.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with Frequency at 1 year old. But there is always room for improvement, and that’s where you come in: I want to hear what you think of the blog. What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? What’s just right? Is there something out there that I’ve completely ignored that deserves attention? Are you tired of seeing this or that? Got any creative ideas for new features to make this place more fun and/or informative?

I’d love to hear any and all thoughts that you have, and I mean that. I will, of course, gladly accept compliments, so feel free to leave them. But more importantly, if you have criticism, put ‘em out there. I’ll listen. (Just be civil, OK?)

There are two ways to do this: Leave a comment on this post, or e-mail me at bsalmon [at] bendbulletin [dot] com.

I look forward to hearing from you. And I look forward to another year of covering Central Oregon’s fine music scene!

I’m on KPOV’s “Right Here, Right Now” in an hour

Friday, April 16th, 2010

A few weeks ago, I participated in a panel discussion about culture in Central Oregon for “Right Here, Right Now,” a program on Bend’s community radio station, KPOV.

Also on the panel were Maralyn Thoma, owner of 2nd Street Theater, Linda Spring, who’s active in the local alternative arts scene, and Bob Woodward, who’s been involved in Bend’s creative culture for more than three decades.

That discussion was recorded and will air at 5 p.m. (or shortly thereafter) today on KPOV, which is 106.7 FM on your radio dial. You can also stream it at www.KPOV.org. That’s about 45 minutes away; sorry for the late notice.

It was a good, fun discussion, and I hope you’ll give it a listen.

A looong list of New Year’s Eve options

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Oh, hi there. I’m Ben. Welcome to my blog. I almost forgot about it.

Let me tell you something, folks: Work + Everyday Life + Blogging = A Very Busy Dude. But Work + Everyday Life + Holidays = No Time For Blogging. I apologize for the quiet around here over the past week or so.

Now, two things:

1. Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve, which means you’re probably looking for a party to attend. And guess what? People are throwing parties all over town! The Bulletin’s calendar lists more than two dozen events tomorrow night, and while we probably missed one or two out there, I’d venture to say you won’t find a more complete list anywhere.

Click here to check out the whole list of New Year’s Eve options. I also wrote about some of the best events that feature live music here.

2. Before the holidays, I posted an overview of music in 2009 (including 36 songs for free download), and several posts about the best music of the past decade. I wanted to wrap up the decade stuff before I posted the 2009 stuff. And then I wanted to wrap it up before Christmas. And then New Year’s. None of those happened. Now, I just want to wrap it up. And I will. So stay tuned for more reflections on how the 2000s sounded.

nearfarplate

Welcome, music aficionado! You’ve found your way to the Frequency blog and Near/Far, The Bulletin’s online hub for coverage of 2009′s best sounds.

For the third year in a row, we’ve collected dozens of the best songs of the past 12 months from both local and national acts and created a two-disc compilation of free, legal MP3s for your downloading pleasure. You even get cool CD sleeves with artwork and tracklists! Let’s get to the good stuff:

Download “Far” by clicking here
Includes 18 songs by some of the coolest national acts of the year, including Animal Collective, The Avett Brothers, Brendan Benson, Japandroids, The Very Best, Felt (with Aesop Rock), Atlas Sound, Portugal. The Man, Box Elders, Alela Diane, J. Tillman, Telekinesis, Shabazz Palaces and more. See the entire “Far” tracklist here.

Download “Near” by clicking here
Includes 18 songs by some of Central Oregon’s best artists, including Empty Space Orchestra, Person People, Moon Mountain Ramblers, Eric Tollefson, Erin Cole-Baker, Mosley Wotta, Anastacia Beth Scott, The Mostest, Tuck And Roll, The Snag, Dan Shanahan and more. See the entire “Near” tracklist here.

(Please be aware that a few of these tracks might contain some coarse language.)

In today’s issue of Frequency’s big print brother, GO! Magazine, we’ve got several pages dedicated to reviewing music in 2009. For example:

-My favorite albums of the year.
-My 10 favorite local albums of the year and a round-up of some other notable local releases.
-The best musical moments of the year through the eyes of those closest to the scene, presented in handy Top 5 list format.
-My short overview of the Central Oregon music scene in 2009. (Hint: Local musicians stepped up big time.)

Here are some bonus things that are only on the blog:
-My favorite concerts of the year in Central Oregon.
-More Top 5 lists from locals close to the music scene. (We got a ton of these, and ran out of room in print.)

Last, but not least, you’re currently looking at The Bulletin’s music blog, Frequency, where for the past couple of weeks I’ve been reviewing the best music of the past decade. Click here to see those posts, and check back, because I’m not done yet.

And finally, we still have the 2007 and 2008 Near/Far compilations available for free download. Just click here to grab them.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to send me e-mail. I love feedback, and am always looking to improve Frequency.

Frequency Radio

on air

You may or may not have checked it out yet, but sitting over there in the sidebar to the right is a streaming music player I like to call Frequency Radio.

Over the past couple days, I added a few tracks to it, including the Mostest song and The Lonely H song you can download to your own computer here.

And now, a little bit about the other bands joining the player:

Welcome to Frequency

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Hi there. As the subject line says, welcome to Frequency, The Bulletin’s new music blog.

This day has been a long time coming. I’ve wanted to have a blog dedicated to the music of Central Oregon (and beyond) for a while now, but the idea has been pushed to the back burner many times.

Today, though, that changes.

Download the best music of the past two years

Friday, May 8th, 2009

As long as we’re, y’know, starting a music blog, we might as well empty the vaults, I say.

For each of the past two years, I’ve put together an overview of the best sounds of the previous 12 months for GO! Magazine, covering both local and non-local acts, and live and recorded music.

Here’s the best part, though: Each year, The Bulletin has hosted a big, fat, free, downloadable compilation of the best tracks of the year.

In 2007, we offered up 30 MP3s, 15 by locals and 15 by non-locals. In 2008, it was 36 total tracks, again split right down the middle.* You also get some cool artwork and track lists to go with your tunes.

It all comes in a few handy .zip files. And did I mention it’s all free?

Anyway, both are still on the site, and you can still grab ‘em. Get 2007 here and 2008 here. (The former was designed for our old Web site, so please forgive the herky-jerky look. The downloads are still good.)

*2007 artists include Aesop Rock, the Arcade Fire, The Shins and Blue Scholars, plus Person People, The Erins, Coyo and Shireen Amini. 2008 artists include Fleet Foxes, Jamie Lidell, Atmosphere, The Cool Kids and Wolf Parade, plus Mosley Wotta, A.M. Interstate, Larry and His Flask, The Dirty Words and Willie Carmichael.
