new CD/record store in Bend: Recycle Music

So Saturday afternoon I was driving from work to lunch when I pulled up to the intersection at Arizona Avenue and Bond Street and noticed what looked like a blue piece of art perched on top of a tree stump. “Huh,” I thought. “That’s new.”

Then I saw a sign on the building on that intersection’s northwest corner that said Recycle Music. Now my interest was really piqued. When the light turned green, I turned onto Bond, looked in the door of the building and saw racks of CDs.

Now, if you know me, you know I was, um … very interested. So I parked, walked in and had my mind totally blown.

This was a fully formed record store — complete with that record-store smell — that had just suddenly appeared, seemingly out of thin air. It was well stocked with rare records and posters on the wall. There was a nook dedicated to DVDs and tchotchkes, and a wall full of stereo equipment. There were CDs in the middle of the space and vinyl LPs lining the walls. Hats. Shirts. Stickers. Patches. The whole shebang.

And in the back, boxes and boxes of hundreds (maybe thousands) of LPs for sale at $1 each. I bought 10: The Beatles, Todd Rundgren, early Bee Gees, Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Cheap Trick, Rush.

I talked to the owner, Keith, who said he had been working on the shop for a month with the windows drawn, merging some of his own stock with a large collection of records he’d purchased from someone in Tacoma, Wash. Then on Saturday, he put an ad on Craigslist and opened the door.

I was flabbergasted, truly. I know most people wouldn’t be, but I guarantee you: If you love record stores, go visit Recycle Music. You’ll be amazed that the place just sort of popped up all of a sudden.

Keith (I didn’t get his last name) said regular hours begin today at 10:30 a.m. So presumably, he’s down there, at 3 N.W. Bond Street, next to Bend’s Indoor Garden Station. Want a peek at what he’s doing? Here are a few photos from that Craigslist ad:

This is cool, but my negative attitude says “Well Ranch must be hanging by a thread, so how can there be room for two?”

I’ll go take a look. But my purchasing loyalty is back up at Ranch Records when it comes to ordering new CDs. I did shop both Ranch and Boomtown back in the day and lamented the loss of Boomtown. But the folks at Ranch are great to not only buy music from but also talk music and Bend with. They are my friends and loyality needs to count for something. But, sure, I’ll take a look at the new place.
