Summer at the Schwab Ticket Giveaway #2: Michael Franti & Spearhead

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012, 3:06 pm by Ben Salmon

Last week, we gave away a couple of tickets to see Huey Lewis and the News this summer at Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend, and we’ve got a bunch more Schwab-show tickets to unload over the next few weeks.

But today, I’m going to alter the schedule I posted last week to squeeze in a pair of tickets to see Michael Franti & Spearhead at the amphitheater on Aug. 22!

Mr. Franti's future is soooo bright...

To win ‘em, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post and tell me your favorite “summer album.” Interpret that however you wish: The album that feels like summer to you. The album that makes you feel all warm inside. The album that takes you back to a particular summer. The album that’s a ray of sunshine in your life. An album that has a sunny title. Whatever. Just tell me the name of the artist and the album, and if you want to give me your reasoning, too, I’d be happy to read it!

Be sure to leave your real email address so I can contact you if you win. I’ll pick someone on Friday at 5 p.m. and post a comment with the winner.

And remember, if you’d rather just buy ‘em, Franti/Spearhead tickets will be available at the amphitheater’s website beginning at 10 a.m. Friday.

(Finally, if there’s anyone out there wondering: This week I had planned to give away Beck tickets. I think I’ll save him for next week and do Beck and The Shins at about the same time. FYI.)

  7. Steve R says:

Songs In the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder, released over 35 years ago and still one of my favorite albums. I bought it the summer after my freshman year in college and listened to it more times than I could count. An amazing singer and songwriter.

  8. Ryan McMahon says:

Dj jazzy Jeff & the fresh prince. Summertime. I love this song. Even if it is still old skool. Gets me pumped for summer.

  9. Fawn Sybrant says:

    Sublime-40oz To Freedom
    Total summertime album for me!

“NIGHT SWIMMING” on Automatic for the People by R.E.M. always makes me long for those sweet summer evenings….

  13. matt says:

Dazed and Confused Soundtrack-great tunes, great flick, and great memories of the end of school and start of summer.

  14. Kevin says:

Best Summer Album: Consists of some live bluegrass at Elk Lake, some First Friday performances, a few Les Schwab concerts from the kayak or on the grass, and all mixed together with some waterfalls, mountain winds and hoots of joy coming from the Cycle Pub.

  15. Adam Cash says:

There are tons of great ones out there, but She & Him’s Volume Two is probably my favorite. It’s like floating the river with my ears. Also could make a case for “In Light” by Givers or Vampire Weekend’s first album.

  16. Stefanie says:

Steve Miller Greatest Hits & The Eagles album “Hotel California”. Takes me back to those warm hazy days at Tumalo State Park – boys and girls :) playing hacky sack, drinking silver bullets and listening to the music by backing up the car and leaving the doors open :) – Yeahhh the days of micro brews in Bend had just been birthed by Gary Fish. Loved Bend then and loving Bend now.

  17. Shelley Jones says:

The album that game to mind instantly is Alice Coopersbalbum from 1972 – Schools Out.
    t
Loved it! Nothin’ said summer better!

  18. Valerie says:

Bob Marley and the Wailer’s Natural Mystic. So many wonderfuls summer days listening to Bob and skankin it easy while the Sun is Shining.

  19. Gerry Zendejas says:

    Bob Marley’s Exodus!!!

  20. Briana Larson says:

The album that always takes me to summer no matter what time of year it is….Sublime’s self titled album. Pure love

  21. Derf says:

Yell Fire, Michael Franti, of course…

  22. Jen says:

For some reason I really like to listen to 1984 (Van Halen) when I work in the yard, so that’s the first album that comes to mind when I think of summer albums. :-)

  23. Martha Cullen says:

Rootdown…after an amazing free concert at Old St. Francis McMenamins last year their debut album was the theme for my summer!

  24. Cheryl Schadt says:

The Sound of Sunshine by Michael Franti & Spearhead. I was at the Michael Franti concert in 2010 – was the perfect summer evening! Would love to repeat the experience.

  25. john says:

    Bob Marley – Legend
Just has that summer vibe – I was listening to it today before playing sand volleyball in April in Bend. I’ll take summer whenever I can get it.

  26. Christina Campisi says:

I have to echo Cheryl Schadt….I love Michael Franti & Spearhead. That 2010 concert was one of the best concerts I have ever been to.

  27. scott halvorson says:

Surf Punks – My Beach; The brother of the guy from Captain & Tenille (no, really) starts a punk band and does bratty punk songs complaining about non-locals coming to surf and stealing his waves. Pretty much the worst thing ever, but pretty much the best thing ever.

While I have nothing whatsoever against the gentleman, I don’t care for Mr. Franti’s music and wouldn’t take the tickets from somebody who would really enjoy them, and am abstaining from official contest entering, (I think I’m late, anway) I just saw the summer albums topic and couldn’t help wanting to share such a delightful album as My Beach.

  28. Ben Salmon says:

    Good answer, Scott! Love it.

Folks, I will pick a winner soon, but a variety of factors – kid’s birthday, company coming, messy house, gorgeous weather, Record Store Day, etc. – are keeping me from doing so right now. Check back tomorrow!

  29. Ben Salmon says:

Well, lots of great answers on this one, but congrats to Patrice Dirksen, winner of two tickets to see Spearhead in Bend! (Assuming she still wants them. I will be in touch with her…)
