La Pine firefighter killed in 2-car crash

A captain with the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District was killed Friday in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 97 about seven miles north of La Pine.

James Judson Palmer, 37, who had been with the fire district since 1999, was entering the highway at the intersection with State Recreation Road at around 5:35 p.m. when his vehicle was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by Roy Gus McMahon, 48, of La Pine.

Palmer was pronounced dead at the scene. McMahon and his passenger, 48-year-old Kimberly Marie McMahon, were taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend with non-life threatening injuries. A section of the highway was restricted to one lane for more than two hours while emergency crews responded to the crash.
