Well, this is fortuitous: I was already stoked to see Portland’s throwback-soul/pop outfit Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside on May 19 at McMenamins Old St. Francis School in Bend. Now, the quartet has been chosen as Portland’s best new band, according to Willamette Week, which polls a bunch of scenesters over there and tallies the votes to find some sort of consensus in a town overflowing with fine music. In that piece, WW calls Ford’s sound a “21st-century Ella Fitzgerald who channels rock-’n’-roll history through Gossip Girl.” I can’t improve on that, so there you go. And here’s a clip of her and the Sound Outside doing their thing:
