Alright, folks, it’s time for Frequency’s first-ever contest! Very exciting.
Here’s the deal: The super-energetic Latin-jazz band Tiempo Libre — born in Cuba, now based in Miami, so you know it’s authentic — is performing at the Tower Theatre in Bend on Tuesday. By all accounts, this is going to be a heck of a fun show, especially if you’re the dancin’ type.
The band also has a new CD out called “Bach in Havana,” which pairs Tiempo Libre’s timba style with the transcendent brilliance of some dude named Johann Sebastian Bach. Sounds a little weird, I know, but it works quite well. You can listen to the whole album at the band’s Web site to hear for yourself. (Just click “Launch player.”)
OR!
I have a sealed copy of Tiempo Libre’s “Bach in Havana” to give away, and I’m going to give it to one of you guys. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post and tell me why you’d like to hear the thing. Your deadline is noon on Friday — that’s only 48 hours from right now — and I’ll pick a winner that afternoon. Be sure to leave an e-mail address that you actually check so we can figure out how to get your CD to you.
Tickets to Tuesday’s Tiempo Libre show are available through the Tower, and I’ll have an article on the band in Friday’s GO! Magazine.

I was looking for a fun something to go see and do next week with my best guy and came across the announcement for Tiempo Liebre @ the Tower. I am a big fan of Cuban/Cuban-inspired music and my guy is a Jazz aficionado– how perfect is this combination for a couple of music lovers? I checked out Tiempo Libre’s site and found the link to the new album and took a little time to really listen to their style. I am an instant fan! Found out about this little contest from a cross post in their newsfeed on facebook! I would love to share this album with my guy and as a rememberance for what will surely be an unforgettable performance next tuesday.
We were invited to see Tiempo Libre perform with Cleveland Institute of Music at Severance Hall in Cleveland. We weren’t sure what to expect but it was a great beginning. When the students left the stage and Tiempo Libre returned, we were hooked. What a way to warm up a cool Cleveland evening!
This sounds like a great combination. I have quite a bit of classical music and this certainly will put it in a different light. I don’t pay too much attention to most of the music scene but I think I’ll buy tickets to this one. Thanks for featuring it.
Love this whole genre of music, would love to add this to my collection. Have latin family roots and this music speaks to us….Am unable to pay for the concert but would love to hear more. Too bad tickets are so pricey….Thank you for sharing this talented groups music on your website…this is great exposture to these artists and their craft. I wish them well!
Still can’t legally travel to Cuba where the repressive gov’t has a free arts school at which these guys learned their classical music because somehow if Americans went there we’d all be doomed…so at least let’s share around some of their grads amazing fusion. One small step for their music, one giant leap for American foreign policy
I had the pleasure of watching Teimpo Libre perform on Dancing with the Stars. Watching the professionals dance to their contagious music made me an instant fan. Unfortunately, I am not able to attend the concert at the Tower on Tuesday so would love to dance to their music in the comfort of my own home.
I’m going to the concert because I have been a jazz fan for 60 years and have come to appreciate it in most of its forms, including Latin.
I first got interested when Stan Kenton released an album titled “Cuban Fire” in the 1950′s, then Woody Herman cut an album with Tito Puente.
I got more into latin jazz when Sergio Mendes came on the scene with Brazil 66 and the Bossa Nova craze began. I was a disc jockey/program director at the time, and Boosa Nova was a great transition on a playlist from one form to another.
I hear a lot of music described as “dance” these days, but Latin and Latin jazz is what makes me want to get up and do it at age 71.
I Love Latin Music and I just heard their commercial on TV, they sound fantastic and I’m going to see if my hubby will take me to see them perform at the Awesome Tower Theatre. I’d love to have their CD in my collection, thanks!
