Not-so-newsflash: Pink Martini coming to Bend

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

It’s one of the worst-kept “secrets” in town: Portland’s little cosmo-pop orchestra, Pink Martini, is bringing its “Oregon! Oregon!” tour to Bend’s Les Schwab Amphitheater on Aug. 29.

Tickets cost $16 for general admission and $49 for reserved seats, available through Ticketmaster beginning this Saturday at 10 a.m.

The date has been listed in promotional materials and such over the past couple of weeks, but it was never officially announced by the company that books the Schwab until a couple days ago, so I’ve been holding off on posting it.

Anyway, “Oregon! Oregon!” is a celebration of our fine state’s 150th birthday. I’ll just let the press release tell you about it:

In 1959–to celebrate the 100th birthday of Oregon–the Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company commissioned Grammy-Award-winning radio personality Stan Freberg to write a short 3-act musical comedy about the Beaver State. 50 years later, a team of Oregonians, including members of PICA’s Flash Choir and writers from Live Wire! banded together to write a new Act IV, complete with brand new songs and a rollicking plot.

With an all-star Oregonian cast backed by the 234th Army Band and Pink Martini, the world premiere staging of Oregon! Oregon! 2009 takes place across the state this summer in celebration of Oregon’s Sesquicentennial, followed by a full set by Pink Martini.

This will be the second time in three years that Pink Martini has played the Schwab. You can read my review of their 2007 concert by clicking here.

Sonic Youth on Jimmy Fallon

Holy cow, Sonic Youth sounded great last night on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” Check it out:

The band plays at Roseland Theater in Portland on July 28. Frequency road trip, anyone?

Resist Sonic Monoculture!

Oops! I missed this little shindig until it was too late to get it into GO! Magazine. And by “missed” I mean “forgot about.”

Anyway, Portland DJ The Incredible Kid will return to Bend tonight to spin the freshest dance music from around the globe at a party he calls Bend It Like Bhangra. All the details are on this flyer:

Bend It Like Bhangra

Fifth world rhythms. That sounds rad.

For years, The Incredible Kid has teamed up with fellow DJs Anjali and E3 to run the long-standing international dance-music parties Atlas and Andaz in Portland. Their Web site is here, and if you click here, you can read a story I wrote about them when they brought Atlas to Bend a few years ago.

I’ve been getting more and more into world music in recent months, and I have to say, Bend It Like Bhangra sounds like a pretty great time. If I were in Bend tonight, I’d be there. But I’m not, so you should go in my place.

June 19 in GO! Magazine

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Good morning music fans in Central Oregon and beyond! Do you want newspaper articles about musicians playing in and around the region? Hope so, ‘cause we’ve got ‘em. Here’s what you’ll find in this week’s GO! Magazine:

-Eugene bluesman Jesse Meade is playing at Silver Moon Brewing, and my colleague Marielle Gallagher tells you everything you need to know about him.

-Texas folk singer Eric Taylor performs at a home near Sisters and an old church in the ghost town of Richmond.

-Music on the Green cranks back up in Redmond this week.

-Two old favorites, Blue Turtle Seduction and Hillstomp, are back in town this weekend.

-Acoustic reggae dude Trevor Hall plays at Silver Moon Sunday.

As always, subscribers to The Bulletin’s Web site can get to all of those stories, but non-subscribers will run into some problems.

A guide to upcoming music festivals (updated)

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

(Update: The look of this post did not turn out how I’d hoped. I think I’ve fixed that. More importantly, a colleague reminded me that Breedlove Guitar Co. is holding a festival later this summer, so I’ve added those details below.)

Coyote Festival

For music fans, summer means one thing: festivals, festivals, festivals. After a fall, winter and spring of crowding into dark, sweaty bars and clubs for live music, there’s something about crowding into bright, sweaty pastures for live music that just sounds so refreshing.

Central Oregon has its share of music festivals, though the number in 2009 will be smaller than in past years. More on that later. For now, let’s focus on the present.

Festival season kicks off this coming summer solstice weekend with the Coyote Festival, held at Summer Lake Hot Springs near Paisley. That’s not exactly in Central Oregon, true, but we’re going to count it because there are a whole lot of local bands playing there, and a whole bunch of people from the area are heading down for the party.

The lineup is headlined on Friday by Taarka and Larry and His Flask, on Saturday by Moon Mountain Ramblers and David Jacobs-Strain, and on Sunday by Coyo. There’ll be three stages, fire dancers, workshops, drum circles and, of course, dips in the hot springs. Kids are welcome, too, and there are activities planned for them.

Tickets to the Coyote Festival for the entire weekend cost $50 and are available at Music Makers, The Cosmic Depot, Bend’s Indoor Garden Station and Ranch Records in Bend. There are also discounted rates for kids and for single-day passes. You can find a ton of info at www.coyotemusicfestival.com, or by calling 541-943-3931.

The fun doesn’t stop this weekend, though. After the jump is a list of music festivals happening within an easy drive, along with all the details you need to know.

The real scoop on the situation at Players Bar

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Players Bar & Grill

If you follow the Bend music scene closely, you probably know there’s been some turnover at Players Bar & Grill.

And even if you don’t, you may have seen the words “THE SHOWS WILL GO ON” on the west-Bend bar’s marquee and wondered what’s up.

Rumors are flying, but here’s the scoop, straight from former manager Buck Bales and new manager Chrissi Thompson:

June 12 in GO! Magazine

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Hello? Oh … hi there! Hi. I’m Ben, and I run a blog about music. It might’ve been hard to tell over the past couple days; it’s been pretty quiet around here. Sorry about that. I’ve been very busy avoiding giant descending set pieces and putting out GO! Magazine. Speaking of which, today’s issue contains … that’s right … articles about music! You know, maybe to make up for the lack of posts over the past couple days, I should tell you about them, eh?

-Bend’s community radio station, KPOV, is celebrating its fourth birthday by gathering a bunch of local musicians and holding a Beatles Singalong. Click here to read all about it and check out our “Abbey Road” album cover re-creation with some of the organizers.

-Hailstorms? What hailstorms? Summer is just around the corner, and summer music series are cranking up. Get all the details on the Summer Sunday concerts at Les Schwab Amphitheater, a whole bunch of shows at Angeline’s Bakery in Sisters, the new Music in the Canyon series in Redmond, and weekend music at Elk Lake Resort. Now that’s covering all of Central Oregon.

-Portland band Weinland played at McMenamins Old St. Francis School last weekend. You can read my review here and watch three videos of them here. They turned out nicely!

-Larry and His Flask is heading out on tour and playing a send-off show before they leave. Find out where and when and who else is on the bill here.

-The Summit Saloon & Stage has a very busy week planned, with Dirty Penny, Indubious and National Theatre Project slated to play. Details here.

-More music to check out: Rapper Freddie Gibbs at the Domino Room, The Erins and their friends Ugly Purple Sweater team up for a show, and Mirf the Bing headlines a benefit concert.

If you’re a subscriber to The Bulletin’s Web site, you’ll be able to see all those. If you’re not, you won’t, and you’ll either need to subscribe or pick up the print version of the paper.

Video: Weinland at McMenamins in Bend

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Excellent show by an excellent band. You can read my full review in Friday’s GO! Magazine. For now, though, tide yourself over with not one … not two … but three videos from Weinland’s show Saturday night in Bend! Watch one before the jump, but don’t forget to click through and watch the two after, too.

First up: “Sunken Eyes”

Waves and waves of Wavves

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Look, I don’t hate the music I hear here. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it.

But you tell me: Is the music you hear there really worth all of this attention and interest?

p4k1wavvesp4k

This current wave of lo-fi/noise/pop bands that are dominating the music blogs (and seem to just keep coming NO END IN SIGHT!) is getting to be too much. I’m as much a sucker for the next big thing as the next guy, but in this case, it feels like we’re being hoodwinked.

It’s enough to make me wanna buy a crappy guitar and find a friend with some crappy drums and bang away and become worldwide stars.

Photo/Review: Cicada Omega at Silver Moon

I didn’t get to see a lot of Portland trash-blues band Cicada Omega Saturday night, because I spent most of my evening seeing Weinland at McMenamins. (More on that later.) But I was at Silver Moon long enough to notice a few things:

-What was a quartet is now a trio, as bassist Daniyel Hicks was nowhere to be seen, and word around the club was that he is no longer in the band. Which is a little odd, considering three of Cicada Omega’s four members have known each other for more than a decade and, essentially, moved from Kentucky to Portland to make music together.

-Even without Hicks, the rest of the band makes one heck of a racket. These dudes are loud and fiery.

-The band’s frontman, The Rev. B.D. Winfield, is an expert yelper, screamer, howler, growler and all-around cantankerous kind of guy. The chatty Silver Moon crowd got under his skin: “Y’all shut up now, ’cause this s–t is gonna blow your mind,” he shouted at one point.

-Winfield resembles, both vocally and physically, Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock. Add in his belligerence and his banjo skills, and the two are like twin brothers from different sides of the country: Brock from the drab suburban Northwest, and Winfield from the swampy, slow-paced world of Western Kentucky.

-Using only two drummers and slide guitar or banjo, Cicada Omega puts a pretty punchy spin on Delta blues. Rhythm is the name of the game for this band; Winfield can play and sing, but really, it’s all just pieces of a puzzle meant to make you involuntarily shake your thang.

-Watching people dance — and the different ways people dance — is endlessly entertaining.

There are a couple more photos of Cicada Omega in the Frequency Flickr pool, which you can browse here.
