May 22 in GO! Magazine

For the first few months of 2009, people asked me over and over if I’d heard what big-name bands would be playing on Memorial Day weekend at Bend’s Les Schwab Amphitheater this year. As the days passed, my answer became more and more pessimistic, and their disappointment became harder and harder to hide. How quickly we forget that, while we did enjoy some great concerts last year, the Schwab was silent at this time in 2007. And so it is again this year.

But in today’s GO! Magazine, we have lots of great options for all you lovers of live music out there. Click the band names to read more about each of these fine shows, and don’t miss the downloads in between:

-Tonight, Bend’s own El Dante plays Silver Moon Brewing. (Detroit garage rockers The High Strung also play tonight, but I blew it and left them out of the print version. Look for a blog post on that show coming very soon.)

-On Saturday, you can catch brainy indie rock by The Thoughts at Silver Moon, or you can get down to the sounds of Heavyweight Dub Champion at the Tulen Center.

-Monday brings the hilarious (on purpose) metal band Psychostick to Players, as well as alt-country singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith to a house concert in Sisters.

-On Wednesday, hit up McMenamins Old St. Francis School to see Portland bluesman Colin Lake and his Wellbottom band.

-Finally, on Thursday, you can visit Silver Moon to see Eugene-based blues veteran David Jacobs-Strain. Or, you can hear two excellent Canadian country singer-songwriters — Ian Tyson and Corb Lund — at the Tower Theatre.

Of course, there are tons more options beyond these. You can find them listed in our events calendar and our Area 97 Clubs page in GO!

Oh, and the eighth season of “American Idol” wrapped up this week. Read my final recap right here.

Reminder: Only subscribers will be able to see all those articles (though anyone can grab the MP3s), so if you find yourself hitting a paywall, you’ll either need to subscribe or pick up a newspaper.

And now, please enjoy this video of Ian Tyson and Corb Lund riding horses across a field in Alberta. Lund almost gets bucked off at the end!
